1. the act of displacing.
2. a being displaced: »

His laziness caused his displacement from office.

3. a) the weight of the volume of liquid or gas displaced by a body floating in it. This weight is equal to that of the floating object. b) the difference between the initial position of a body and its position at a later instant, measured from some chosen point.
4. the volume in a pump or engine cylinder displaced by the stroke of the piston.
5. the distance of movement of rocks or strata in a geological fault.
6. Psychiatry. a form of defense mechanism in which an emotion that is repressed when first experienced is later expressed in connection with something unrelated; transference.
